Hammond Clinic Recognizes
Dr. Fred Portney for 50-Years of Service
Munster… Hammond Clinic staff and members of Dr. Fred Portney’s family celebrated his 50-year career at the clinic with a reception at the clinic’s Specialty Center on August 5.
“After fifty years, Dr. Portney continues to inspire younger physicians and to serve as a role model for them,” said Cynthia J Sanders, MD FCCP, medical director/managing member of Hammond Clinic. “The current Clinic partners hold him in the highest regard and are pleased that they have the opportunity to work with him. Because of the dedication and hard work of physicians like Dr. Portney, we’ve provided quality care to the residents of our community for more than a half century,” she added.
Dr. Portney, an Urologist, earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed his internship and residency requirements at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital. He then joined the Navy, serving in the Medical Corps and attaining the rank of Lieutenant. Portney joined the Clinic’s staff in August, 1959. He is also a founder of the Munster Surgical Hospital (formerly Calumet Surgery Center) adjacent to Hammond Clinic.
He and his wife, Gloria, have five children, 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Experiencing Back Pain?
The Hammond Clinic Physical Therapy Department holds FREE back screenings on the 2nd and 3rd Thursdays of each month at the Family Wellness Center in Munster. Appointments are available from 12:00 Noon till 4:00 p.m. on each of these days. An appointment is required.
There are many different reasons that people experience back pain. During the free screenings you will learn more about your spinal function and your musculoskeletal anatomy that may help you to identify the factors that cause back pain and dysfunction. Hammond Clinic Goes 100% Smoke Free
As of January 1, 2008 all Hammond Clinic facilities, including the Specialty Center in Munster, Family Wellness Center in Munster and our St. John Clinic are 100% smoke free. No smoking is allowed inside or outside of the facilities.
The health and welfare of our employees and patients drives this important policy change. As the leading healthcare facility in Northwest Indiana for the last 50 years, we feel that this final step in our efforts to eliminate smoking in our facilities is warranted.
